When life hands you lemons, double-down on gratitude

The Pursuit of Profit

When you’re thinking about quitting your corporate job and launching your own business, it’s so easy to overthink your options. And, perhaps even worse, jumping at the first “no risk” franchising opportunity someone tries to sell you.

Before you do anything drastic, book a 30-minute call with the Franocity Team. Let us help you figure out your next best decision.

Hi Reader,

No matter how much wealth you accumulate, no matter how successful you are as a business owner, some days are gonna suck.

Sometimes you get stuck in traffic for an hour or have a three-hour flight delay. Maybe you step on a huge wad of gum somebody spit out on the sidewalk. Or you get home from the drive-through only to realize they left out your burger.

A string of little stuff like that can accumulate and totally ruin your day. But getting pissed off about it doesn’t help. In fact, getting worked up can harm your health, your relationships, and your business.

The key to your success is figuring out how to keep the little things from getting to you, which is illustrated well in this quote:

"Circumstances are incapable of considering or caring for your feelings, your anxiety, or your excitement. So stop acting like getting worked up is having an impact on a given situation. Situations don’t care at all."
—from The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman

5 specific actions to help you navigate life when things don’t go your way

No, you can’t fix traffic or flight delays, but you can fix your approach to life’s big concerns and small frustrations.

Here are 5 specific choices you can make to help you maintain focus and enjoy your life.

  1. Go outside. It seems counter-intuitive to block off 90 minutes and go sit outside. However, the science of human behavior tells us that observing nature reduces anxiety. Whether you sit and stare at a tree or take your kid fishing, soaking up sunshine and nature helps you navigate and negate negative emotions.
  2. Go to the gym. Move your body. This may be an earth-shattering revelation, but your body is connected to your brain, and your brain on caffeine and sitting in a chair all day is terrible for your ability to reason and make good decisions.
  3. Say thank you. Gratitude is an acknowledgment that humans depend on one another. The delivery guy makes it possible for you to spend more time with your kids. Your spouse puts up with you when you’re cranky. Saying thank you is recognizing that somebody else is making your life better.
  4. Refuse to fill your mind with crap. Whether it’s doom-scrolling on Twitter/X or watching some creepy reality TV show where only the mean contestants get ahead, just don’t. Eliminate that shit from your life.
  5. Be grateful. Focusing on what you have keeps you from fixating on what you don’t have. More importantly, acknowledging what you have is good for your brain. Your neurotransmitters fire and your body releases oxytocin — AKA the love hormone.

We don’t control circumstances. We do control our choices. It might be that your next best choice is to go outside and take a walk.

Your problems will still be at your desk when you get back, but you’ll be better equipped to come up with a solution.

With gratitude,

The Franocity Team
